Dimarzio Dp408 Virtual Vintage ’54 Pro Strat Pickup Cream

Dimarzio Dp408 Virtual Vintage '54 Pro Strat Pickup CreamDimarzio Dp408 Virtual Vintage ’54 Pro Strat Pickup Cream
The Virtual Vintage 1954 Pro pickup uses the same ground breaking technology as the Area 58 and Area 61 pickups. The 54 Pro replaces the Virtual Vintage 54 and Virtual 2 middle pickups. It has a warm, smoky sound, fattens up when you pick hard, and has a special grade of Alnico 2 magnet to reduce string pull. And like all of the Virtual Vintage models, it’s dead quiet. The DP408 pickup is recommended for all positions.Tech Talk: The major difference between the 54 Pro and the Area 61 is in pick attack. The 54 Pro has a fatter, woody tone, and the sound almost seems to compress when picked hard. Blues players favor this type of sound for the way it fattens up solos, particularly in the bridge position. The DP408 pickup is also good in the neck and middle positions to warm up bright-sounding guitars.

Joe Satriani has used the Fred as his main bridge pickup for years. This year Joe asked DiMarzio for a hotter and bigger version to replace the Fred in his Ibanez guitars. In response, DiMarzio created the DP216 Mo’ Joe Bridge Pickup, and it’s all about tone and definition. The name says it all. It has more power than the Fred, but it doesn’t sacrifice clarity or dynamics. Additionally, all the harmonics that made the Fred guitar pickup so good are all there, ready to jump out at the touch of a guitar pick. Having more output makes it a perfect match for the PAF Joe in the neck position. The combination delivers great versatility and control from rhythms to solos. Recommended For: bridge position, solid and semi hollowbody guitars. Tech Talk: The last few years have seen Joe develop a new signature tube amp and start using heavier-gauge strings more often. Both developments emphasized the importance of the Mo’ Joe pickup in having a high degree of string separation without sounding sterile or processed. DiMarzio achieved this by slightly increasing the distance between the center frequencies that the coils are tuned to, without increasing DC resistance. The result is a pickup that’s both hotter and more articulate.

Designed for John Petrucci’s Music Man JP13 guitar, the new Illuminator Neck and Bridge Models are the next generation in John’s signature pickups with DiMarzio. John says he looks for versatility in his pickups so that he’s able to span a multitude of different sounds within one guitar, going from massive overdrive, very tight, rhythmical and aggressive to “more expressive, dynamic and very liquid” when he plays solos. They’re a bit bold – with more of the clarity and presence that John demands.John used the new Illuminator and Illuminator 7 pickups during the recording of Dream Theater’s self-titled album. Recommended for neck position.Tech TalkJohn wants his neck and bridge pickups to occupy separate musical spaces that “speak” to each other, with individual voices that both blend and stand on their own. The Illuminator Neck Model is louder than a typical vintage humbucker, and it has more headroom and a wide-frequency bandwidth. It has a lot of clarity with a clean amp, and warmth without muddiness with heavy overdrive.Wiring: 4 ConductorMagnet: CeramicOutput mV: 295DC Resistance: 10.50 kOhm

The DiMarzio DP210 Tone Zone P-90 is a high-output, humbucking soapbar pickup with the same sound and power as The Tone Zone humbucker. Because of their plastic cover, “soapbar” pickups usually can’t be adjusted quite as close to the strings as standard humbuckers, and compared to full-size humbuckers, soapbars have a slightly narrower magnetic window to “see” the strings. Both factors are taken into account by slightly increasing power and broadening the magnetic field around the coils to allow The Tone Zone P90 to sound as great as the original Tone Zone. Designed for the bridge position, it comes with 4-conductor wiring enabling series-parallel humbucking or split-coil modes.Recommended For: Bridge position, solid-body guitars with soapbar pickup cavities.High outputQuiet, humbucker performanceHumbucking and single-coil modes

The DiMarzio PAF DP103 humbucker pickup has a smooth, almost voice-like quality and that intangible swell to the notes after attack. It possesses vintage output and breathes freely with an open, warm character. Played flat-out through a non-master volume tube amp, the 36th anniversary PAF recreates the deep character of the great plug-in, turn-up and wail school of tone. Modern potting techniques and tight, consistent winding eliminates squeal and microphonics common to the original guitar pickups.

Jake Bowen is one of the new generation of guitarists on the cutting-edge of progressive rock. His sound is helping to redefine rock guitar, and his pickups play a major part. The Titan Neck and Bridge Model pickups were developed for his new signature guitar by Ibanez.Jake’s bridge pickup is crucial to his sound, and the most important feature is that it needed to be tight. It also needed to have good dynamics for right-hand playing yet still keep the aggressiveness and mid-range that Periphery’s music calls for. The Titan Bridge Model is at home with both standard and dropped tunings. Additionally, Jake shares that “it’s a very tight, aggressive palm-muted sound when I do palm-muting strokes but – when I play open chords – everything rings out very nicely.”Recommended for bridge.Tech TalkMany high-output pickups are either very bright or very dark. The Titan Bridge Model is bright where it needs to be – on the low end. The highs are warmer, and the Titan has a distinctive voice that doesn’t get lost, even in a dense, three-guitar mix.Wiring: 4 ConductorMagnet: CeramicOutput mV: 418DC Resistance: 11.07 kOhm
